THE STORY SO FAR

2011

What a good place to start, Fizz Fam! Robyn and Ed met while being bonafide scientists at University College London. With a shared love of things like; doing stuff logically and repeatably, wearing lab coats, and totally not blowing up test tubes of chemicals, it was always going to be a recipe for success.

2012

After graduating and both getting jobs in the London craft beer scene, Robyn and Ed started playing around with making Ginger Beer at home. Liking what they tasted, they bought a vintage tricycle, Elise, and started pedalling about the markets of London. Street food geniuses KERB even gave them a residency at their summer markets.

2014

After experimenting with a few more flavours and building up a crowd of Pop Pals, Robyn & Ed quit their day jobs, borrowed some money and founded and built The Square Root Soda Works in a railway arch in Hackney, London. This is where every bottle of Square Root is made from fruit to bottle.

2015

Because every bottle of Square Root is made in house by us, we can make any flavour of pop we desire! So when Bleecker Burger came knocking wanting their very own Arnold Palmish (we can't use the actual name for legal reasons), we hopped to it. This collaborative Iced Tea Lemonade is still on Bleecker menus (and our online store 😉 today!)

2017

We first started out buying fruit from New Spitalfields wholesale market, but by 2017, we'd grown so big it was time to start getting it from the source - farmers! Did you know we met our Sicilian fruit supplier, Carmelo Laudani, via a lonely hearts ad on an online citrus forum? It took him over a year to find and reply to our message, but now we're officially lemon BFFs! (This is a true story!)

2019

After making millions of bottles of pop (literally!) on our original manual kit, it was time to expand and build a new Soda Works. So we moved to our brand new, purpose-built space in East London in 2019. With the help of some genius engineers, Ed designed and commissioned our new bottling plant. With a new factory came new branding as Robyn worked with some talented designers to bring the Square Root brand to life.

2020

2020 had us spend more time chatting with each other on the internet (what else was there to do, eh?). Seeking an innovative way to design her next drink idea, Robyn collabed with Sober Girl Society to ask you, the people, to vote for which flavour you actually want to drink. The Non-Alcoholic Mojito was born and quickly became one of our best selling bevs (cheers, Fizz Fam!)

2021

It was time for "fruit to bottle" to also become "fruit to can" as we launched our bestsellers in tinnies. We asked our marketing team for designs that would turn the soda world upside down, and they took us a little too literally. Behold our topsy turvy can designs that help you swirl up the sediment before cracking them open. Just don't swirl after you've opened them - it'll definitely make a mess!
